AQUATIC PLANT MANAGEMENT PLAN
Help Shape Green Lake’s Aquatic Plant Management Plan
The Green Lake Sanitary District and Onterra, with support from the Green Lake Association and funding from a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources grant, are leading the development of a new Aquatic Plant Management (APM) Plan for Green Lake.

This plan will guide how aquatic vegetation is monitored and managed across the lake to:
-
Meet state permit requirements,
-
Protect water quality,
-
Support healthy aquatic ecosystems, and
-
Improve recreational access for all who enjoy the lake.

The APM Plan is also the first step in a larger Watershed & Lake Management Plan (WLMP), a long-term, science-driven roadmap for restoring and protecting Green Lake.

To ensure the APM Plan reflects both science and the values of the community, we’re inviting public comment through June 3, 2025 by sending them to the Green Lake Sanitary District via email: GLSDoffice@glakesd.com. Please find the full draft plan here, observe the referenced maps here, and the Appendix here.

Whether you’ve noticed increasing plant growth, struggled with lake access, or want to share your experience fishing, boating, or swimming—we want to hear from you.

What We've Heard So Far
In preparing this plan, we’ve already gathered input through:
-
11 stakeholder focus groups involving more than 80 participants—including anglers, farmers, shoreline property owners, and local officials.
-
A shoreline survey conducted in fall 2023 assessing nearshore vegetation and land use.
-
A community survey sent to shoreline residents in fall 2023 to better understand how the lake is used and perceived.

These conversations revealed widespread concern about:
-
Increasing nuisance vegetation like duckweed, filamentous algae, and uprooted plant mats.
-
The impact of phosphorus runoff on aquatic plant growth and overall lake health.
NEXT STEPS
Feedback received from the public will directly inform the draft APM Plan. Once completed, the plan will be shared for final review and implementation by the Green Lake Sanitary District.

Together, we can ensure Green Lake remains a healthy, vibrant place to live, visit, and enjoy—for generations to come.
