About the Event
We are looking for citizen scientists to take secchi depth measurements 1-2 times/month for the months of May through October. Sampling will happen out on the lake, so volunteers must have access to a boat, kayak, or other means of getting to their sampling location.
A secchi disk is a circular black and white disk that allows us to get a measurement of water clarity, an important indicator of lake health. It signifies the amount of algae or suspended solids in the water. If you are able, we request that volunteers purchase secchi disks. At the end of the season they can be donated back to the GLA or kept for monitoring in future years. If you can't purchase a secchi disk but still want to volunteer, the GLA has 10 on hand that we can lend out.
