Protect Green Lake with Lake-Friendly Wake Guidelines
It has been brought to our attention that an industry-favored bill about wake boats is expected to be introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly in the coming weeks. This legislation could weaken local protections that safeguard our lakes.
Here in Green Lake, Wisconsin’s deepest natural inland lake, we know what's at stake. Our lake fuels our economy, draws visitors, and gives us a place to fish, swim, and gather with family and friends.
Wake-enhanced boating is an activity many enjoy on Green Lake — and with the right guidelines, it can continue to be part of our lake life. Science shows that the large waves created by wakesurfing travel farther, stir up phosphorus, erode shorelines, and damage fish habitat. That’s why our local governments already require wake-enhanced boating to occur at least 700 feet from shore and in 40 feet of water or deeper. These guidelines still allow wake-enhanced boating on 60% of Green Lake’s waters — while protecting the lake’s near-shore habitat and water quality.
By supporting this petition you are joining us in urging Wisconsin lawmakers to:
-
Keep local protections in place, not weaken them
-
Support statewide, science-based standards that balance recreation with conservation
-
Require ballast tanks to be fully drained and sanitized to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species
By signing below, you stand with our community in protecting Green Lake — and all of Wisconsin’s lakes — for generations to come.
